Electric cars may gain range with a gasoline engine backup

Automakers are considering an unusual way to make electric cars more appealing: pairing the battery with a small gasoline engine used only as a generator. The setup would increase range and reduce drivers’ fear of running out of charge, especially in markets where charging points are still limited.
