Formula 1: why races are 305 km and what will change in 2027
The minimum length of a Grand Prix is a long-standing F1 rule. From 2027 it could be revised to fit the new championship format.

In Formula 1, every Grand Prix must cover at least 305 kilometres, with Monaco as the exception, where the number of laps matters instead. The rule was created to ensure races are long enough to test cars, tyres and strategy without turning every weekend into an endurance event.
From 2027, the FIA wants to review several race-format parameters, including the minimum distance, to match the evolution of the cars and the calendar. The aim is to keep the right balance between spectacle and technical demands, avoiding races that are too short or too tough for fans and teams.
