One million electric cars: could Italy’s power grid really handle it?

If one million electric cars were on the road in Italy, would the grid truly struggle? That is the question behind an analysis aimed at measuring the impact of battery-powered mobility on the national electricity system. The numbers suggest the risk of a general blackout is far away: the extra demand, while significant, would remain spread out over time and across the country, especially if charging mainly happened at night, when household and industrial consumption is lower.

The real issue, however, is not just how much energy is needed, but when it is requested. If everyone plugged in at the same time, especially during peak hours, local distribution networks could come under pressure. That is why smart charging, time-based tariffs and the widespread use of public and private charging points with load management are so important. In other words, the problem is not the absolute amount of electricity, but how demand is organized.

Looking at the bigger picture, Italy would have the tools to support a major expansion of the EV fleet, provided that grid upgrades, storage systems and infrastructure investments move forward together. The transition therefore depends not only on cars, but on the ability to turn the energy system into something more flexible and modern. The message is clear: electrification is sustainable, but it must be managed intelligently.
