Why Formula 1 races run 305 km and what will change from 2027
The F1 distance limit is no coincidence: it comes from championship history and will be adjusted under the new rules from 2027.

In Formula 1, most Grands Prix do not exceed 305 kilometres: this threshold was introduced to keep races within a reasonable duration while still allowing for very different circuits. Monaco is the exception because its track is shorter and slower.
From 2027, the format could be revised with a slight increase in race distance at some events to match new technical and sporting needs. The aim remains the same: deliver excitement without turning GPs into races that are too long or unpredictable.
